Germany insures everything. You need about three things.
Health cover, private liability, and protection for your ability to earn. Get those three right and most of the rest is optional. Get them wrong in your first weeks, in a hurry, in German, and you pay for it for decades.
Where cover goes wrong
Too little of what matters, too much of what does not.
The health decision made in a hurry
Public or private, chosen once in your first weeks. The wrong call in a rush follows you for decades. Our finance partner models both with your numbers before the choice locks in.
Often around €1,200 a year at stakeThe liability nobody told you about
Private liability covers the costly everyday accidents you would otherwise pay for yourself, and landlords ask for proof before you sign. It costs about as much as one dinner a year.
Around €30 to €60 / yearThe asset you forgot to insure: your income
Everything else you own comes from your ability to work. Roughly one in four people cannot work until retirement age. Cover is cheapest and easiest to get while you are young and healthy.
Cheapest in your twentiesIllustrative figures for a typical international household in Germany, not a calculation for you.
What our finance partner sorts with you, and what it tells you to skip
- Public or private health insurance, modelled on your income, age and plans
- Private liability, in place before the lease
- Income protection sized to what you actually earn
- Household, legal or travel cover only when your situation calls for it, and cancelling what does not

Good to know.
Should I choose public or private health insurance?
It depends mainly on your income, age, health and family plans. Public (GKV) is the default and usually the best value. Private (PKV) can mean better cover and sometimes lower premiums while you are young, but it is a long-term commitment that is hard to reverse and premiums rise with age. Our finance partner models both for your situation before you decide.
Do I really need private liability insurance?
For most people in Germany, yes. It is inexpensive, covers the everyday accidents you would otherwise pay for yourself, and landlords frequently ask for proof before you sign a lease.
What about all the other insurances I keep hearing about?
Most are optional, and some are a bad deal. Phone insurance, most travel add-ons and savings products sold as insurance are usually a no. Household and legal cover depend on your situation. Our finance partner tells you which is which, and says so when the answer is nothing.
Three things right. The rest optional.
